Growing your own plant recap

After about 6 weeks after we planted the plants ( see growing your own plant post) they have grown heaps. We have been watering them every day and look fantastic. We have used the herbs and lettuce in salads. Here is a picture of our lettuce and herbs that we have grown over the past 6 weeks. See it really is that easy to grow your own plant. It helps the environment and is a fun activity. What do you think about growing your own plant? If you grow your own plant tell me about it and send me a photo!! I would love to see some home grown plants!!!

Solar Panels ( all about solar panels)

A few days ago some men came to my school and put on solar panels on our new library. Solar Panels are a great way to get electricity without making pollution. This is called renewable energy. Renewable energy is energy provided from sunlight, wind, rain etc.

How does a Solar Panel Work ?

A Solar Panel works when the sun goes on to the solar panels and the energy from the sun gets turned into electricity

Where do you find Solar Panels??
Solar panels can be on peoples houses, they can be on street lights and big buildings. Almost anything. They can even go on a car !!!!!
How much are Solar Panels?

For 6 Solar panels the price ranges from 2,000 around to 3,000 Australian dollars.

My mum and Dad are going to put Solar Panels all over the roof when they build there new house!!!!! Hopefully soon!!

Growing your own plant

Today My mum and I are going to plant some herbs and lettuces. Firstly we started to get the soil prepared to plant the plants. We found a patch of soil and put a whole bag o cow manure on it. Then you mix the cow manure with the original soil. Then we used the worm castings (see story about wriggly worm farms) and mixed that on as well.

Secondly we got our containers of small herbs which you buy from the plant shop. You then make holes in the soil in lines about 2cm apart. You then very carefully pull put eat plant at a time and place it on one o the holes. After you have done this you very carefully push in the soil around the plant filling on the holes. Then give your plants a big water an wait for them to grow. Make sure you water your plants everyday. We planted 2 types of lettuces and we planted rocked and basil.

What does everyone think about growing you own plant????

Bottle Collection

In South Australia they have a bottle collection program. Where you can bring in cans bottle and milk cartons where they would be recycled. With every bottle and can you give to this program they will give you 10 cents. Do you guys think that we should do something like this in NSW? this would be a great idea to do in Australia. This was also in the lastest BTN - the link is on my last post.

Plastic Oceans

Hello everyone the other day i was watching a story on BTN about PLastic Oceans about how much plastic was going into our oceans. I thourght you would like to watch it. Here is the link to watch this episode.
http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s3591476.htm

I think this is a great episode and supports my blog all the way. If everyone didn't use so much plastic there would be less in the ocean, less in landfill and we could save the earth.

In a rush .... Make sure to turn the lights off

Hi guys i haven't posted things for ages i know. Well this week i will be posting 3 new stories. You know those days when you're in a rush for school and work and the house is all messy and you leave some lights on. Then when you come home you see lights on and go i didn't turn the lights off. Well imagine this if every single person in the world left one light on a day that is about 6 hours if you go to school and 8-9 hours if you work. That is wasting so much electricity. Electricity is very important so we can not waste it. So when your in a rush turn off all the lights it doesn't matter if the house is a mess because that is not wasting electricity. If everyone did this then maybe one day our world would be saved.

Please leave comments so i know people are reading my blog and i will keep posting. don't forget to turn off all the lights!!!!!

say no to plastic bags take a stand

Hi everyone i am sorry i havent been posting much it because i have been so busy but now i have loads to tell you about. So today we wnt up to the coner shops an got some milk, bread and a few other things. We were paying for the items and they put them in a plastic bag without even asking if we wanted one. So next time when you go to the shops remeber to bring a bag from home and put your items in there. If everyone did this there would be a  lot less pollution.

Now over 120 people hae read my blog. This great because some day i know we will be able to stop the pollution. One day. Remember to post comments so you can give me suggestions about what to right.Tomorrow will be a great post about our plant which is growing a passion frut. That is all for now my dearest readers

Wriggly Worm farm

In our garden we have a worm farm. In the worm farm are worms da!!!! You can put your food scraps in the worm farm which the worms eat. Then the worms castings ( poo and wee) are turned into a fertiliser for the garden. Worm farms are great for food scrapes

You can put most vegetables and fruit. But you can't put on any Curtis things or any protein and no plastic. You can also put in news paper.

Worm farm don't take up much space And you can easily put it on a balcony.

Here is a picture of my worm farm

And here is a picture of the castings.

Herb or veggie gardens all the way

Hello every one sorry i haven't posted for a few days. A few days ago when i was cooking a delicous dinner with all the ingredients from the local market. I was making it from Jamie's 30 minute meal cook book when i needed lots of herbs. Thank goodness for our herb and vegetable garden. Then i realized that having your own herb or vegetable garden it is saving quite a lot of pollution, because if you grow the food from seeds you are not buying it from the shops so the food doesn't need to be wrapped in factories that produce the most pollution.

Then well if you don't have enough space for a herb or vegetable garden you can grow a few herbs in a pot which is quite easy and if everyone did this there would be less pollution.

Recycle

Hi everyone I know that I have already posted something today but this has something to do with the thing I posted today. I was looking at the packaging for the geleez and the little plastic bags had the recycling sign on it which is great because now I can recycle it.

But the big lots of plastic don't have the recycle sign on it. This is bad because the big bits of plastic when make more pollution that the small the plastic bags. It would be better if the big plastic could be recycled.

plastic containers can actually be recycled

Hi everyone i know i already posted something today but i really have to share this. I was having sushi for lunch today and it was really yummy. I am quite sure most people have sushi take away and eat it at home and that is what we did. Well as i was saying i was eating sushi for lunch at home when we finished and we started cleaning up. There was so much packaging for such small things. There was a plastic bag it all came in, then there were all these plastic containers.

 TO MUCH PLASTIC!

Then i was about to put in the garbage bin thinking how much plastic we were wasting, when my mum said check the bottom of the containers to see if they have the recycle sign on them. They did! i was so happy because now we could recycle that plastic instead of chucking it away and it would be recycled maybe into another sushi container. The message from all of this is that when you are about to chuck a plastic container out, just check the bottom to see if it has the recycle sign If it does put it in to the recycling bin instead of the garbage bin.

Bondi markets

Good morning it is day light savings today. Yesterday i went to the local Bondi markets. We go there every Saturday to buy our fruit and veg for the week. we got all the things we needed for the week. Shopping at your local market is a great way to lower pollution because the food at Woolworths and Coles has all been delivered and most of the time wrapped in plastic. This is also wrapped in factories which cause most of the pollution. Then we went home and i cooked Jamie Oliver's Jerk Chicken it was so delicious. I cooked this with all the fresh produce from the markets. I love cooking especially with local produce because it so fresh and taste delicious.

introduction of blog

My name is Star and I am 11 years old. I am determined to do something about how much pollution we produce as humans. We produce thousands of tons of pollution each year. This year has been the highest recorded pollution since about 100 years ago. Australia is one of the many countries who produce too much pollution. In less than 100 years our world could end if we keep producing as much pollution as we are today. That is why i have decided to this blog. If everyone did a few little things to help the environment there would be a lot less pollution. And our earth will be around much longer. The aim of this whole blog is to reduce pollution and make people aware of ways of living sustainably. I will be posting some things we can do to help us reduce the pollution. If we all do some of these things it will make a huge difference as we can Save The Earth.
